John Philip Sousa (1854 - 1932) was an American composer and conductor in the late Romantic era best known for American military and patriotic marches. He is often referred to as The March King. He wrote three novels -- "The Fifth String," "Pipetown Sandy," and "The Transit of Venus" -- as well as a full-length autobiography, Marching Along and a great number of articles and letters-to-the-editor on a variety of subjects. The Fifth String is the story of a young violinist who makes a deal with the Devil for a magic violin with five strings. The strings can excite the emotions of pity, hope, love and joy - the fifth string is death and can be played only once before causing the player's own death. He has a brilliant career, but cannot win the love of the woman he desires. At a final concert, he plays upon the death string.

Who knew that The March King, John Philip Sousa, wrote books besides music?

This was news to me, until recently when I was doing some research, I came across a short list of books he wrote, and this is the first I was able to get.

This is a retelling of the make-a-deal-with-the-devil. Indeed, there are many different versions of this storyline, including “The Devil and Daniel Webster, “ “Faust,” “Damn Yankees,” “The Devil and Tom Walker,” et al. Sousa’s version is a refreshing change of pace.

Violinist Angelo Diotti is smitten with the lovely Mildred Wallace and makes a deal with the demon Mephistopheles. Everything hinges on the unusual fifth string on a violin Diotti was given – unusual in that violins don’t have a fifth string and unusual for what it is composed of. Not only is this a Faust-esque tale, it is also a twist on the fall of Eve or the curiosity of Pandora – things that lead to man’s downfall or demise.

Sousa is, not surprisingly, a very good writer. His sentences are complex and descriptions are real and vivid. Naturally, because Sousa was primarily a musical composer, “The Fifth String” is rife with beautiful descriptive musical terminology and settings.

This is a book that I would recommend. It can be read in an evening (160 pages), and it keeps the reader’s interest.

My wonder and amazement at the talents of John Philip Sousa shall never cease! I knew of his skill as a musician and composer but had no idea he had written books! I was completely captivated by the two short stories in this book! I cannot recommend it enough!
Strange reading a story by John Philip Sousa. He was obviously a much better band leader and band music composer. This is not really a bad story, just mediocre. Don't bother to read it.
